Happy New Year everyone! We hope you had a wonderful 2014, and we hope that in 2015 you find the sun on your face, the wind in your hair, and adventure just a pedal-stroke away! We invite you to join us this coming year for bike rides, yoga, maintenance help, potlucks, baked treats, new friends, and new discoveries.
We also would like to remind you that we are 100% volunteer run, and would like to thank all the people who have helped make the Bikery a reality this year! Clarke, our Monday mechanic of several years, Luis and Mark, our Tuesday mechanics and core volunteers since the very beginning, Alex, our very knowledgeable Sunday mechanic of the last couple years, Dora, Sunday volunteer and amazing pastry chef for our events the last couple years, Sharon, weekly YoCycle ride leader and instructor extraordinaire, Dennis, our brief but amazing Monday mechanic now bike touring the pacific coast, Junu, our computer guru who even made us a mobile app for volunteers, Ayla doing web outreach, event planning and fundraising, and our incredible shadow volunteers Michelle on Tuesdays, Jen, helping with event planning and fundraising, and Marci and Sondra just joining us with bike maintenance shifts and event planning! Without all these incredible people nothing that we do would be possible!
We would also like to thank all of you who have come in to work on your bikes, come to events, and helped to create a fun and supportive biking community in the valley! Thanks for your energy, your donations, and your support. We hope we have been able to provide valuable resources and a good time.
If you would like to get more involved with the Bikery this year feel free to come to one of our monthly volunteer meetings. Our next meeting is Wednesday, January 14th at 7:30 pm at Tres Hermanos Restaurant in Van Nuys. We need all sorts of volunteers – some that are good at bike maintenance and some that have other skills like event planning, leading rides, fundraising, making art, and more – bring us your ideas and help make them happen.
And finally, we always need help keeping the lights on and the doors open. Please donate here to help keep us in a brick and mortar location and to fund more events and programs. All your donations are tax deductible as we are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Special thanks to the Van Nuys neighborhood council for their generous donation this past year, and to those of you who have already donated money and/or time.
Happy New Year and keep riding!
Love the Valley Bikery :)
Here’s an interesting piece from Joe Linton at Streetsblog about where the Valley has invested transportation funding.
“…the Valley has received modest transit investments, because the Valley really prioritized its transportation investment toward car infrastructure.
When Measure R was negotiated, Valley politicians held firm on money for Valley highways. Not so much on funding for San Fernando Valley transit infrastructure. The same was true when local politicians sought and obtained $1.1 billion in Federal transportation funding to widen the 405 Freeway. Valley electeds have made highway spending a priority. Freeway money, lots of it, is what they got.
In some cases, Valley leaders actively worked against Valley transit infrastructure, including state legislators banning subway tunneling and banning rail on the Orange Line right-of-way. The Orange Line rail ban was overturned in July 2014, long after Measure R was passed.”
Yocycle will be going on a winter hiatus after this Sunday for a couple reasons:
1. It’s getting colder and outdoor yoga doesn’t work so well when it’s cold or rainy.
2. Our beloved Yocycle instructor, Sharon, is taking maternity leave! Congrats!
This Sunday we also are saying goodbye to one of our wonderful volunteers, Dennis, who is about to embark on a bicycle tour from Vancouver to Mexico! Where he goes after that no one knows, but we are happy he was able to be a part of our awesome volunteer group for a little while. Good luck and bon voyage!
In celebration of Sharon and Dennis and all they’ve contributed to the Bikery we are throwing a potluck BBQ at the last Yocycle of the season, this Sunday November 9 th. It will be part BBQ, part baby shower, part goodbye party, and of course part yoga part bike ride!
So stop by for some yoga and yummy food, and hellos and goodbyes. :)
We are tight on space so we are getting rid of a lot of bikes and parts. Pick up a frame, wheels, seat, etc. cheap!
The Bikery will also be open during the sale if you want to install your new purchases onto your bike right away.
We even have a couple bikes that are nearly complete, and a brand new bike in a box that just needs to be put together.
Saturday October 18th
9 am – 2 pm
In front of the Bikery – Look for us with lots of bikes and parts on the sidewalk in front of our shop (Victory blvd 1 block east of Van Nuys)
There will be a BAKE SALE too! What would the Bikery be without Biked goods and Baked goods :)
